Lights Off

Filed under: Uncategorized — naera @ 3:19 pm

Am taking time off for a mental spring cleaning, creative production, and lining my little ducks in a right row. Now or never…

In the meanwhile, am delighted and proud that Obama signed his health care bill at 12:05pm this afternoon. History in the making…

On a sad note, another story that illustrates how our modern society is molding and neglecting teenagers who lack guidance and structure. Furthermore, we revere technology like a new bible. We submit to trashy realty media. Consume facebook & twitter for no importance. Instant exposure and gratification is the new motto. Modification and accountability has no meaning. All of this has been a great source in shifting the minds of youngsters to become idle, senseless and irresponsible. It’s a scary time in many ways… Sigh.

Be back in a month.

Poem: The Guest House

Filed under: Uncategorized — naera @ 11:52 am

A poem sent by a friend.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

The Over-Accountability With Melancholy from Hell

Filed under: Uncategorized — naera @ 10:22 am

It’s that time of the week, month, year, decade… Insoluble melancholy.

With so much day-to-day stuff going on, trudging through the occasional blues is like getting a rotten potato as your birthday cake. What’s worse is when we keep it bottled up. Understandably, there is only so much one can console to best friends about, and you are certifiably positive that no one is experiencing your kind of struggle…. Recently I was feeling dismal and thought about calling a friend or two. But when realizing that it would be a burden to the ears, I simply acted like my life was a bliss.

An overwhelmingly amount of people out there are breathing a similar challenge of upsets and life’s crap as we speak – maintenant! (right now). So why so silent? Why do we mute ourselves to secrecy and pretend everything is swell? As a woman, we should be Kumbayaing hand-to-hand with our colony of girfriends, siblings and mothers.

Let’s be candor about this… We are ashamed with the notion that we can’t solve the unresolvable issues in our lives. We are disappointed for not being who we wish to be, with, how and where. And I think many of us feel deep inside that we somehow created the problems indirectly. So we try to mend and fix the problem quietly… If you think about it, this a common behavior of “over-accountability” by women.

Consider it a temporary exile from happiness that will reoccur more often than not. But more importantly, consider it that you are never alone in this part of the domain. Never. Alone. So rather than denying your issues by keeping it bottle up, medicating, drowning yourself with the bad. Just be good to yourself and your body. Learn to cope little by little, day by day.

All the problems we are confronted with is a part of the package and makeup of our journey. This is what allows us to evolve as individuals and prepares us for the more complicated road ahead. It also make great stories and bases to teach our kids about life’s survival skills. Because in the end, there is a message to be learned.

It’s called life and we must keep walking with a fake half-assed smile… : )

Shaving Off the Ads in S. Korea

Filed under: Uncategorized — naera @ 10:19 am

My mom, aka The Fat Shaver, would be proud, very proud. Because like Japan, Korea is taking preventative measures on their future generation from being obese. This is a concept some parts of the western culture could learn a lot from, the philosophy of abstaining from addictive intake and ‘maintaining’ good health…

In the past decade having dinner with my side of the family means brown rice, mixed with all kinds of wheat grains and beans. If you know what birds and hamsters eat, then there you have it. It’s all wholesome goodness on your plate, and I don’t take it for granted. The only two people who get plain white rice are my two children…

With obesity on the rise and kids diagnosed with heart disease and diabetes, it’s only a matter of time before the government should cut to the chase and handle the epidemic with a firm grip. Japan is doing it by penalizing their overweight employees. South Korea has announced banning television advertising on junk food to promote healthy eating amongst children. The restrictions apply to hamburgers, pizzas, instant noodles, candies and ice cream… Isn’t this a normal daily diet to millions of folks in the States?? Did I tell you what my Fat Shaver mom did every time we ate at Pizza Hut growing up? She would use about 100 napkins to soak up the grease with, the end result was a cardboard-like rubber on top of a bread. In hindsight, she made a very valuable point, healthy eating habits equal healthy life.

I read somewhere that we should draw a pie chart on our dinner plate: 50% vegetables, 10% meat, 30% carbs, and 10% dairy. So simple and logical.

A Brief…

So I now know who Hollywood is afraid of; James Cameron. George Clooney feels his Godliness. Mo’Nique is mad serious. Meryl Streep looked her best ever. Sarah Jessica Parker didn’t offend. Tyler Perry has a 24/7 smile. Sandy Powell is a bitchy designer. I miss John Hughes dearly. Molly Ringwald… what happened? Kate Winslet finally got a botox. I want Maggie as my fashion partner. If Jennifer Lopez had Penelope Cruz’s accent… Gabby and Carrie are the cutest. Sandra had the best acceptance speech. And that’s why they gave it to her. Did not expect Barbara Streisand. Chrstoph was certifiably eloquent. James Cameron really wanted to be The King again. But his ex-wife’s revenge was the best picture in the house!

Lastly, why Miley and JLo?

Best Supporting Actress: Vera Farmiga of “Up in the Air”

Best Animated: “Up”

Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow (I read a great interview of her, am sold).

Best Screenplay: Quentin Tarantino

Best Film: “The Hurt Locker” & “Precious” (Yes, the only two movies I haven’t seen but read enough about.)

And the Academy Award Goes To…

Having reviewed most of the Academy contending movies on DVD last month, except for Hurt Locker (which I heard is great) and Precious (I cannot watch this movie for the life of me… Even my girlfriend wouldn’t watch it with.) I’m pretty certain of the winners this Sunday. The picks are based on my prediction of who the Academy will favor, not who I think ‘should’ win – a clear distinction.

Best Picture: “The Hurt Locker”. Because the last time James Cameron won Best Pic for Titanic, he impulsively blurted out, “I’m the King of the World”, then Celine Dion drowned the audience with her tearjerking sound track… Oye vie, the Ego and the Drama combined were too overwhelming for me. This year, they will give it to Kathyrn Bigelow as a first-time winner, the opposite of her ex-husband James, and as a female filmmaker. Good enough reasons, I say.

Best Director: Manufactured by James Cameron will win because he won’t win best picture.

Best Original Screenplay: If I were a great writer, I would want to do screenplay all the way… Quentin Tarantino is a Gift to the movie world. He accomplishes this in Inglourious Basterds in the way he articulates and drapes his vision in writing with so much weight, character and details. Not to mention the pacing, color, plot, and how he subjects his characters through different dimensions like no other. I dream that Quentin and Christoph will work together again.

Best Actor: Jeff Bridges, a man’s man. This is his time, and this time only.

Best Actress: Even though Helen Mirren should walk away with the Oscars for “The Last Station”, this year, as crazy as it sounds, feels like Sandra Bullock…. Undeservingly, yes, but at the same time she is very likable and her acting was surprisingly ‘good enough’ in The Blind Side. My daughter adores her, therefore I love Sandra now. In plain english, the voters want to anchor Sandra from Comedy to Drama. Simple.

Best Supporting Actor: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CHRISTOPH WALTZ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hands down. This is the third time I’m writing about him. May there be more Christoph in the future of movies, please.

Best Supporting Actress: Heard Mo’Nique has quite the attitude and expects payday for just about everything. The funny thing is when asked on interviews, she saids it like it is and roars out her view in great lengths, no apology necessary. I kinda like. Heard Mo’Nique was great in the movie. Precious deserves to be recognized in a category, and this is the proper category for that winning.

Best Animated Feature: “Up”. Imagine an animation film that jerked the grown-up audience to shed more tears than they did with the Titanic, and your child is wondering what-the-heck is wrong with mom and dad…

Celebrity: Jack of All Trades That Quack

Filed under: Uncategorized — naera @ 9:28 pm

One thing for sure, celebrities have been plaguing the platform of commoners’ trades… The profession which traditionally require 2-4 years of college training, sometimes a master degree, instilled with code of hard work ethics from the time of apprenticeship for $8 an hour, to years of polishing their craft until aged and refined.

For someone like Lauren Conrad, who made a household name as a reality tv girl, to pen a lackluster book based on her synthetic fame and chimes to a NYTimes Bestseller, thanks to the countless number of dumb citizens who buy white washed literature. This is a down-hill manifestation enough to temp the certifiably prestigious, but struggling, writers to slit their wrist. Certifiably.

They loot just about every industry that pays: fashion design, politics, prostitution (you heard me), modeling, children’s book and more books. When finding out The Asymmetrical Tory Spelling has a new children’s book at a store near you, I feared the planet must have spun in an opposite direction.. I’ve been working on a picture book title for over a year, crafting the character, reediting, soliciting second third opinions, drafting, sketches… This is what I paid my 4 years of college for, to publish my creativity. Only to be bypassed by a has-been TV gal who hijacked the commoner’s dream, my dream. Ugh.

Jerry Seinfeld has recruited his amped up celebrity friends to counsel the everyday dysfunctional couples on his new show. Heck, why not. These celebs check in and out of rehab like it’s a drive through. Therefore, their experience and credibility must be sound and plausible enough to be a therapist every Thursday night… I adore Jerry and somewhere deep in his subconscious mind he is aware that these same celebs are drowning in their personal demons so toxic and unrepairable. Their dysfunctions make our problems look like Pre-K.

They come, loot, regurgitate, repackage and the quality is contradicting and manufactured. Their new found trade is always short lived.
